Gottlieb https://galamiram.com/Looting Looting Looting is an exhibition that builds on extensive research into archaeological sites managed by Israeli settlers in Palestinian territories. Currently, there are approximately 6,000 archaeological sites in the West Bank. When Israel designates a location as an archaeological site, it grants the state the authority to confiscate land and displace the Palestinian population living in the area. The exhibition focuses on three mosaics that were extracted from Palestinian territories in the West Bank and Gaza, as well as an archaeological site in Palestinian East Jerusalem that now serves as an Israeli settlement. The mosaics are held in a museum located in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank. Their removal from occupied Palestinian territory raises questions under international law. Through photo collages of the looted mosaics, the work reimagines them to display the Arabic names of their origins. With photography, video, and archival research, this project aims to reveal how Israel is using archaeology to rewrite history and obscure Palestinian landscape and heritage. make filming or distributing footage of Israeli soldiers punishable by five years' imprisonment, or ten years when intended to harm state security. The installation brings together two videos: footage recorded by the artist during a tour of the occupied West Bank with Breaking the Silence, an organization that collects testimonies and conducts tours about the occupation; and footage of the same encounter published online by the right-wing organization Im Tirtzu. The two recordings document the confrontation from opposing positions, examining photography as a site where evidence, surveillance, and political identity are actively produced and contested. Drawing from extensive photographic documentation of archaeological parks and their surrounding landscapes, the project combines large-scale panoramic collages with a photographic reconstruction of one of the parks’ audio-guide posts, accompanied by a reconfigured soundtrack derived from the original audio guide and field recordings from the site. By reassembling the visual and sonic elements of these sites, the project exposes the mechanisms through which archaeology is mobilized to produce contested historical narratives. developed for undocumenta at documenta fifteen. The work responds to Germany’s treatment of BDS supporters and pro-Palestinian movements and examines how accusations of antisemitism operate within German cultural and political discourse. undocumenta was a joint project by Grayson Earle, Tee Topor, and Chris Rogy. The three met as members of The Illuminator, a New York–based guerrilla video-projection collective that projects images, videos, and protest texts onto site-specific architecture around the world. Activated by ruangrupa’s invocation of lumbung for documenta fifteen—a term that translates from Indonesian as “communal rice barn”—the project extended the exhibition’s themes of collective sharing and nourishment into public space. Each panorama is digitally composed from dozens of news-media images captured over a year and a half, all taken from military-designated vantage points on the Israeli side of the border. As the protests unfolded, new photographs were added to each panorama, gradually constructing a layered image from an event that extended over many months. No individual photographer could have produced these views. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the houseless encampment at the park—located in central Los Angeles—grew to more than 200 residents, many of whom were experiencing the immediate effects of the economic downturn on the city’s most vulnerable communities. Tensions between the park’s new residents and their more affluent neighbors grew over the use of the public space. On March 26, 2021, the City of Los Angeles moved to evict the park’s houseless residents, citing the need for renovations. A fence was quickly erected around the park, making it inaccessible to everyone. Using a camera mounted on a car, I documented the perimeter of the closed park in an attempt to make its inaccessibility visible and to examine the role that invisibility plays in silencing and erasing marginalized communities. Rather than follow the video’s prescribed narrative and path, she navigated its peripheral spaces, capturing scenes filled with distortions, debris, and glitches. These images were then used to produce three-dimensional objects that reconstruct the camp’s virtual environment. Unlike the original VR experience, the resulting installation is visually disorienting and deliberately misshapen, filled with errors and devoid of a clear chronology or narrative.
